Transport
Policies
Any patient that is found to have
MRSA, HIV, D&V or any other contagious illness are always transported
on their own with a crew that takes every precaution necessary to
prevent contamination and infection. The vehicle is then cleaned,
scrubbed and disinfected after.
Any patient that is of poor mental state, physically unable to be
left alone will also be transported on their own, so as to provide
one to one attention and care.
When asked to transport multiple patients for PTS we have a policy regarding the amount of personal property. the maximum amount of baggage is limited to 2 bags per person if extra mobility aids are travelling with the patient limitation will be reduced to the discretion of the crew.
Cardiac patients that are transported
from hospital to hospital will only travel individually either as
separate journeys or in separate ambulances. This not only provides
patient dignity but also in the event of an arrest all efforts,
treatment and care are on the one patient. All our cardiac patients always travel on a stretcher even if able to walk.
Patients who have limited mobility are assessed and if the crew
feel that this person's transfer could cause excessive amount of
discomfort or traumatic then they will be transported on their own
and given constant care.
We always try to minimise the amount of manual handling and lifting of patients. Our crew's will in most cases assist hospitals/homes in the transfer of patients to and from apparatus including hoists.
Patient Relatives and escorts; in most cases we are able to transport patients together with relatives or escorts, in the event of limited space we may ask the relative or escort to travel independently.
For Patients that are DNR a letter signed and dated by a suitable doctor or authorised person must be given to the crew. In these instances if a relative or escort travelling with is disturbed by possible forthcoming events we may ask that they travel independently.
