Huxstep Care Services was setup in
1999 as a home care service for those that needed it providing one
to one care on a personal basis. During this time clients were asking
if they knew anyone who would be prepared to take them out for shopping
trips, doctors, hospitals, dental appointments and family visits.
At the time the idea of disabled taxi services were few and far
between. I needed something that other services could not provide.
The idea came when I had heard about vehicles that were adapted
for wheelchair users. On investigation and after a lot of research
I found several companies that would build a vehicle to suit my
needs. It was decided that I would choose Atlas conversions who
were based in Portsmouth at that time. So the Renault Kangoo was
purchased in October 2001 and used to transport the disabled, As
an experienced special needs nurse and having nursing as my background
and being a member of the St John ambulance many of my clients needed
that extra service I felt I needed to provide more and so the vehicle
became equipped with various pieces of medical equipment such as
oxygen, suction unit, nebuliser and E-lap seat as well as many other
items. Business got off to a flying start, then I approached the
Hospitals in the local area offering my services for transport for
patients that needed to be discharged and were unable to get home
because they were either immobile or in a wheelchair. After a time
the question started coming can you transport stretcher patients,
and of course the answer was no. this carried on more and more to
the point where jobs were turned down, I needed to do something.
Back to research looking around for ambulances looking at prices,
it was decided in the end to purchase a new one, “where do I go?”
Atlas Conversions came to the rescue again. I purchased the Renault
master ambulance conversion. Who is going to man it? Two staff were
employed as well as my husband Ian who was in full time employment
elsewhere but was able to help out evenings and weekends. Not only
did Ian help out he also was the “techno” man, with his computer
skills together with his St John ambulance background. With my extra
staff business expanded. The ambulance work really took off. Unfortunately
with the introduction of the disability act within the Taxi service
many more taxis began to take on fleets of wheelchair friendly vehicles
although not medically equipped. This affected our business with
the cost of private hire licensing and taxis being a cheaper alternative
we felt that the “recreational visits” became less. Therefore it
was decided to withdraw the private hire from the Kangoo and concentrate
on the Private Ambulance side , whilst working for local hospitals,
ambulance services. In the last year work has increased to the point
where we have now purchased a new ambulance
